Computers in the Community

10,927

This is the number of households in Rowan County that, as of the 2021 Digital Inclusion Profile, are only able to access the internet through their mobile devices. With an average of 2.5 persons per household, this means there are roughly 27,317 people without computer access in our county alone.
Students in Training's Computers in the Community Program is hard at work lowering these numbers.

Depending on the type of computer and operating system you prefer, the computers could be low cost or no cost. Having an older computer running Linux (Zorin) is going to have a much lower turnaround cost than a newer computer with Windows 11.

Program Overview:

This program provides no-cost/low-cost refurbished computers to individuals lacking access to reliable technology. SiT acquires used computers from corporations, businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, and community members. Students help inventory, sort, and diagnose donated devices to determine whether to refurbish them or recycle their parts.
All computers are thoroughly cleaned, and previous user data is securely wiped. Recipients receive a device running a modern operating system with an office suite program installed. Recipients also have a free 90-day warranty for technical support. This initiative extends the lifespan of usable hardware and equips community members with necessary technology.
